Lawrence F. Scofield, Jr. 1944 – 2024

 My Friends:

It is my sad duty to inform you that on July 21st, Larry Scofield passed unexpectedly at his home in Harpswell, Maine at the age of 79. Larry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Suzanne (née Forgeron), daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Bradford Psenicka of West Bath, Maine, daughter Heather Scofield of Wakefield, MA, and two grandchildren, Morgan and Alex.

Larry was a member of the Malden High School Class of 1962 and became the first of his family to graduate college, receiving a BA in English and MA in Teaching/English from Boston College. He began his professional career teaching high school English in Watertown, MA, attended Suffolk University School of Law at night and obtained his Juris Doctor in 1973, after which he became a member of the Massachusetts Bar and was also admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. Larry then embarked on his more than 40-year career in real estate law, specializing in title insurance. He became a leader in the evolving title insurance industry, and, as a member of the American Land Title Association (ALTA) forms committee, he contributed to the evolution and standardization of ALTA forms. He taught at Bentley University, lectured frequently, and was often called upon to provide expert testimony in the area of title insurance and real estate- related disputes. Some of his most rewarding work was as a dedicated manager. A teacher at heart, Larry took immense pride in mentoring and helping others develop their knowledge in advancement of their own real estate/title insurance careers.

As a young boy, Larry loved sports, and played both baseball and hockey with neighborhood friends and nearby cousins. He also spent many summer days at the family camp on Sunset Lake in New Hampshire, where he discovered his love of boating, beginning with a simple rowboat, then on to a small skiff and later, as an adult, his first sailboat, which he sailed off the coast of Maine, where he would ultimately retire, shifting finally to a power boat that he kept at his home on the New Meadows River in Harpswell.

Larry was a classic – a true gentleman, known for his big smile, kindness, integrity, caring, sense of humor and generous spirit. He was fiercely loyal, with a deep commitment and devotion to his family and friends, and served as a teacher and mentor to many throughout his life. He had faith in others and always viewed his glass half-full. He was a remarkable man, an amazing father and grandfather, and a devoted husband and son. He loved movies, golf, playing cards, reading – especially history books and novels – skiing, traveling and musical theatre, and followed Boston sports teams passionately. He was a student of history, with an engaging personality and gift for storytelling. A man of his kind comes along once in a lifetime. His trademark mustache, easy smile and kind generous spirit will be missed by those who truly knew him, appreciated him and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, whose work he supported after losing his beloved sister, Pam, far too soon.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
